Despite the lockdown being lifted across much of Ontario on Tuesday, Casino Rama will remain closed.
A spokesperson for Gateway Casinos and Entertainment Limited told CTV News that “We are not reopening Rama and Innisfil for the time being as they are designated in the red zone, and there is the issue of variants of concern, specifically B-117.”
153 COVID-19 variants were confirmed by the Simcoe Muskoka health unit as of Tuesday, with 131 more potential cases awaiting further testing to be confirmed.
As the infection rates decrease across the region, Gateway Casinos says it will work on a reopening plan for Casino Rama with its First Nations partners.
It also states that it hopes to reopen its casino in Innisfil “soon,” at Georgian Downs.
In March of last year, Casino Rama closed to the public. As the reason for the ongoing closure, officials cited the 50-person capacity limit, calling the safety measure impractical for a resort of its size.
