Trainer Jennifer Doyle finished the Prince Edward Island racing season on a high note as her trainee Chocolate Swirl went all the way to the $2,850 Favored Rate on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 7) season-ending card at the Red Shores Racetrack and the Charlottetown Driving Park Casino.
Jason Hughes led Chocolate Swirl to a score of 1:57.4 for Doyle, who shares ownership with Danny Birt. Bugsy Maguire (Gilles Barrieau) finished second, while Pictonian Storm (Gordie Hennessey) finished the triactor.
Doyle and Birt both came back to take the final dash of the meet, as Mantario (David Dowling) recorded a 1:57.4 win over Adkins Hanover (Ambyr Campbell) and Sports Royalty (Barrieau).
Hughes, a regular visitor to the historic winner’s circle with four 10-race driving wins, teamed up with trainer Darryl MacLean to win the $2,800 Fillies and Mares Open with Filly Forty Seven in 1:57.1.
Hughes also won Jetta Flys (2:00.2) for trainer Stephen Quinn and Warrawee Ulla (1:59.2) from his own stable.
Babbling has won his fifth straight race to stay unbeaten since coming to Eastern Canada. Barrieau led the Mike Dowling trainee to a 1:59.2 victory.
Kenny Arsenault registered a training and driving double with Play The Board (2:06.3) and Wunder Shadow (2:04.1).
