According to a press release, Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment (MGE), the owners of Mohegan Sun, announced a new expansion outside of Connecticut. In Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan, MGE will collaborate with Oshidori International Development Godogaisha to bid for an integrated resort license.

The bid process will last through this summer and fall.

Mario Kontomerkos, CEO of MGE, said that he’s excited to be working in “one of the fastest growing markets in the world.”

Kontomerkos added that “As operators of 10 properties globally, including one of the largest integrated resorts in the western hemisphere, we are eager to bring our expertise to this venture.”

Mohegan Sun, Inspire in Incheon, South Korea and the Niagara Casino and the Fallsview Resort Casino in Niagara, Canada are among the properties.

It was named a “landmark development opportunity” by Alejandro Yemenidjian, Oshidori’s President and CEO.

Yemenidjian said that “Through our joint bid, we aim to highlight the rich culture and diversity of the Nagasaki area, and look forward to the positive impact this project will have on the entire Kyushu (Island) region.”
